Thai Massage from Thai Practitioners

At Golden Kinnaree all Thai massages are performed by native Thai masseuses. This choice is not only for fashion. Thais are more sensitive to touch, which is a part of teir culture. It is as natural and familiar to them as a handshake to us. Thai girls often start learning massage very early. Going through an acredited school is a finishing step on their way to perfection.

History of Thai Massage

The roots of Thai massage reach as far as 2500 BCE, into the time of Gautama Buddha’s life. The founder of Thai massage is considered to be the north-indian doctor Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha (Shivago Komarpaj in Thai), Buddha’s contemporary. He based the technique on the principles of Ayurveda from which it later evolved into Nuat Phen Boran - Thai massage as we know today.

Thai massage was originaly used purely as a part of a medicine system and was practiced only in Buddhist temples. Nowadays it is prevalent in most countries of the World. It is being taught not only in Buddhist temples, but in common massage schools too. It is practiced in temples, spas, massage shops, doctors‘, as well as amongst common folk at home.

Northern and Southern style of Thai massage

Thai massage is divided into two styles: Southern and Northern. Southern style is mainly taught in the Wat Pho Monastery in Bangkok. It is harsher and uses more stretching techniques. Centre of the Northern style is Chiang Mai, where the Thai massage is slower, more gentle and focuses on the work with the body’s energy lines, rather than on extensive stretching.

Principles of Thai massage

Thai massage uses stretching techniques and acupressure to unblock the basic energy lines. There are ten energy lines called „sens“. During the massage, the energy flow through these lines is restored which has an influence not only on the physical health (muscle relaxation), but works on mental and energy levels as well.
